The Waikato District Council has a Dog Control Policy to ensure that owners can enjoy the benefits of having a dog, while ensuring the safety and protection of the public and public areas.
The objective of the Waikato District Council Dog Control Policy 2007 is to enable people to enjoy the benefits of dog ownership with no negative impacts on the public.
Dogs are permitted on a leash in almost all public reserves and parks in the Waikato district. The council also has off-leash areas, including beaches, where dogs may be exercised off the leash if they are under continuous control and all faeces are removed. We currently provides five fenced areas for the exercise of dogs in Te Kauwhata, Huntly, Raglan, Ngaruawahia and Horotiu.
