Sisters share District Sports Awards success
It was a successful end to an outstanding year of achievement recently for sisters Mikayla and Jaime Nielson at the Waikato District Sports Awards.
Mikayla picked up Junior Sportswoman of the Year for winning the World Champion title for Under 19 Women’s Triathlon. Jaime won the Sportsperson of the Year for her gold medal effort in the individual pursuit at the Oceania Games. Unfortunately Jaime was unable to attend the awards as she was training in Invercargill in preparation for the 2012 Oceania Games.
Sport Waikato district coordinator’s Amiria McGarvey and Morgan Kutia both agreed that the awards held at Waahi Marae gave the district a chance to recognise sporting success.
“It was great to bring the wider community together for this celebration. Thank you to our prestigious guests, the local businesses who sponsored amazing taonga and the wonderful kai made by the haukainga”, Amiria said.
Other winners last night included Team of the Year going to the Ngaruawahia High School Boys Premier Basketball Team and Club of the Year awarded to the Ngaruawahia Rugby League Football Club. The Sporting Personality of the Year went to Administrator Mel Rutene for her work in rugby league.
Attendees heard from special guest speakers Silver Fern Casey Williams and Rugby League player Lance Hohaia.
