Adopt a dog

The Waikato District Council Dog Pound in Ngaruawahia has dogs available for adoption to responsible new owners. When you adopt a dog, it will need to be registered and microchipped, and we prefer new dog owners to have their new dog desexed. When dogs are available we profile them on this page.  If there are no dogs advertised and you are interested in providing a home for a dog please contact the animal control team to register your interest.  Also, read futher below about rehoming and viewing the dogs.

Re-homing dogs

Dogs will generally not be re-homed to owners with an offending history, and no dogs classified as menacing, dangerous or with known aggressive behaviour will be considered for re-homing. However, often little is known about these dogs’ history and this must be taken into consideration if you are hoping to bring a dog into your home.

Information and advice on introducing a new dog to your home is available from our Animal control officers.  All dogs and puppies rehomed will be given a 3.6kg bag of Iams dog or puppy food to take home.  This is a premium dog kibble that we recommend, and which we feed in our dog pound.  Masterpet kindly donate this to all our dog adoptors.

Waikato District Council reserves the right to make a decision on the most suitable home for any dog available for adoption. Dogs available for adoption can be viewed at the Waikato District Council's Dog Pound in Ngaruawahia.

If we do not currently have available the type of dog you are interested in adopting, please see the Waikato SPCA and the Hamilton City Council, as they also have dogs available for adoption.
