Two thousand and nine people rolled up their sleeves, and gave the Waikato district a spruce up during Keep New Zealand Beautiful Week.
Waikato District Council Chief Executive, Gavin Ion, said Council received an overwhelming response this year, with 13 schools, and 12 clubs and families participating in the event - twice as many people as last year.
“It was really wonderful to see people taking pride in their community and removing rubbish from their local parks and roadways,” he said.
As part of Waikato District Council’s involvement with this community event, a staff cleanup was organised which took place on Tuesday 8 September. The litter cleanup was carried out under the Te Putu Road bridge in Taupiri, with staff collecting 40 bags of household waste and general litter in just one and a half hours.
“While a fantastic effort was made by all those involved in Clean Up Week, roadside rubbish is an ongoing problem that requires everyone’s attention,” Mr Ion said.
If you would like to be involved in the ongoing effort against roadside litter in the district, please contact Christine Cunningham at Waikato District Council on 07 824 8633.
